If you have an 06, maybe not. Check Ebay for a factory service manual. I have one for my car and its really helpful. If you have access to a torque wrench, use it since you don't have an idea of how tight is tight enough(but make sure its accurate, my friend broke two bolts on my cylinder head using an inaccurate torque wrench)

Do not put it on ungodly tight, overtorqueing the bolt can strip it. Hand tight + 1/4 turn is usually the rule of thumb when a torque wrench is not available. You might not be able to get the filter off by hand, espcially if the dealer did a previous oil change. Everytime I have worked on a car that went to the dealer for the previous oil change, the filter was on VERY tight. Most times I have to pound a filter socket on there to get the filter out (then pound the filter socket out). I bought the socket when I was working on a Corolla a while back and its paid for itself 5x over. I started out doing oil changes, and I've moved up to rebuilding cylinder heads so just keep doing smaller jobs until you get the hang of this stuff.

a filter wrench.. I knew I was gonna need help gettin that sucker off. Now if I can just find where to put the new oil in.... I know it's under the hool.. Does it have a cap on it that says '710'? hahahahha I'm joking! Seen that as a blonde joke one day.. OIL upside down.. haha. Ok, enough.
Yes, don't want to get it too tight.. note taken. I am using Mobil-1 5w30 Synthetic oil.. is that cool?
I'm questioning my transmission fluid next... my 3rd to 4th gear is weird.. it doesn't pop but it slides way tooo easily. feels way different then the other gears. I read where someone said you should use Synthetic tranny fluid and that it will help it.... Am I right or did I miss quote what I heard? And if so... will it even really make a difference?
guess I should be posting that under another forum.. but I have dial up and it takes forever! lol

I never could get the oil filter off with a filter wrench, so i used the adjustable strap one. I always use 10w30 oil but its not synthetic, i dont know if that makes a differnece or not but dont break a nail, and be careful if you do it in a skirt

Your Oil cap should say what weight of oil to use. If its not on the oil cap, it will be in the owner's manual for sure. Its good to use Synthetic oil. As far as the tranny problem goes, if the car is under warranty, take it to the dealer and have them fix it. Make sure you have the problem documented under warranty and save all documentation. Also save the documentation of the oil change, put it in a log book if possible. You can change the transmission fluid, I hear Synchromax works good but I've never tried it before. Check owner's manual for the weight of oil to use. Synthetic oil is thinner, so it should work better in the trans as it will leave the space between the synchros faster and make the shifts smoother.

thats what a strap wrench looks like! . We don't have a pep boys here. Skirt what?! to change oil? LOL! nope, shorts and tank... I just know that oil is gonna get me in the face.Yes, I have nails.. I'm probably the biggest girlie girl... but I grew up with 4 brothers who think they are hard a**es and have had to defend myself.. So I can hold my own and got that little tomboy side goin =)

I have an 08. I've only had one oil change done on it. and I know they used 5w20.. which I heard that was okay for it cuz it was winter.. that is why I'm changing and also goin synthetic.
Far as the tranny.. I did take it to the dealer.. but they think I'm nuts. lol. They told me nothin is wrong with it.. but honestly.. it just doesn't feel like it did when I first got it.. It started bout week after I had it. Ya, know how u just know the feel of ur car. Maybe there is nothing wrong with it.. but I don't think usin synthetic in it would be a bad thing.. actually better for like you said.

jen the 06 up si's have a tsb on the 3rd gear problems

Transmission Grinds When Shifting Into 3rd Gear, Pops Out of 3rd Gear, or
Is Hard to Shift Into 3rd Gear

SYMPTOM
The 6-speed manual transmission grinds when shifting
into 3rd gear, pops out of 3rd gear, or is hard to shift
into 3rd gear.
NOTE: These symptoms can be intermittent and
sometimes more noticeable in colder climates.

PROBABLE CAUSE
The transmission has a faulty 3rd gear synchronizer or
3-4 shift sleeve.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the 3rd gear set.

Where did you get that info from??? Is is a recall or even a consumer report that I can take in with it so I have proof and they can't argue?
