View Full Version : Hey all! back..any pointers? JenSI 04-17-2008, 04:31 PM I'm back! Been gone for forever...been goin thru some things =( Anyhow, guess what... I'm changing my own oil for the first time tomorrow all by myself! Got all the stuff and I'm ready to do it =) Any pointers?? haha GReddy_Civic 04-17-2008, 04:39 PM Ummmm have something to catch the oil? make sure to dip your fingger in the oil and put it around the seal of the new filter. Its easier if the oils warm too and check the oiil pan plug for any metal shavings...Good luck. P.s. change the to lower case letters to get your sig to work reaper2022 04-17-2008, 04:42 PM I assume you don't have a lift and you plan on using floor jacks. Anyway, make sure you lay down cardboard or something under the car... I've never been able to not get some oil on the ground when I change mine. Also, make sure the drain bolt is on pretty ungodly tight... I've made the mistake of thinking it's "tight enough" and letting my car sit overnight... you'd be amazed at the puddle of oil a car can accumulate overnight with the oil steadily dripping out of the pan every 10 minutes or so. Also, make sure you wipe all the oil off everything it might have dripped on... burning oil is a terrible smell. Also, on an unrelated note, I think it you change the IMG in your sig to lowercase, the picture should show up. GReddy_Civic 04-17-2008, 04:48 PM ORIGINAL: reaper2022 Also, on an unrelated note, I think it you change the IMG in your sig to lowercase, the picture should show up. Beat you to it:) reaper2022 04-17-2008, 04:54 PM Yeah, I know[8D] I sort of zoned out halfway through typing or else I'd have beat you :D JenSI 04-17-2008, 04:59 PM Thanks =) I am using ramps... someone told me they would be more simple for me as long as I don't drive off them...lol.. instead of tryin to figure out the right spots to put the jacks. I was scared I wouldn't put them in the right spots. I did know to put oil around the seal of the new filter.. I've been reading up on this so I can do. Love cars...always wanted to work on them.. so this is step 1 right!? hahaha. gonna be funny 108 lb. girlie girl tryin to get that filter off.. I'm excited and can't wait to get to work! yay! GReddy_Civic 04-17-2008, 05:11 PM hahaha o man...if you can, blcok the back wheels with wood or something, wont totally prevent anything but can help, ebrake, use it. and actually, get a Haines manual for your civic. If theyre out for that year, that is AgentofDarkness 04-17-2008, 05:14 PM Do not put it on ungodly tight, overtorqueing the bolt can strip it. Hand tight + 1/4 turn is usually the rule of thumb when a torque wrench is not available. You might not be able to get the filter off by hand, espcially ifthe dealer did a previous oil change. Everytime I have worked on a car that went to the dealer for the previous oil change, the filter was on VERY tight. Most times I have to pound a filter socket on there to get the filter out (then pound the filter socket out). So if you can't get it out, head over to autozone with the new filter and get a socket that fits it.Take the oil filter off first, that way if you can't get it off you can still drive over to autozone to buy a socket. I bought the socket when I was working on a Corolla a while back and its paid for itself 5x over. I also picked up some other misc strap filter wrenches/sockets from a garage sale and they are very helpful especially since I got them all for under $5. You can never have too many tools. I started out doing oil changes, and I've moved up to rebuilding cylinder heads so just keep doing smaller jobs until you get the hang of this stuff. JenSI 04-17-2008, 05:16 PM are you laughin at me? lol! Ok, dude told me I didn't need to chock the back wheels as long as I used the ebrake... but that was my ex who told me that.. is he tryin to kill me or what? LOL! They got the manual at Auto Zone? GReddy_Civic 04-17-2008, 05:18 PM Actually, ive always used a strap wrench with rubber straps, does the trick for me http://www.filtersfast.com/AquaPure-6890034-filter-wrench.asp just like that actually. Im not sure if they have it there, it might not even be out yet, i got mine at pep boys, but you can check/ask if they can order it too. Id do the blocks just in case, and if you cahnge the oil in a skirt or something, ill lol. girlie girl, dont break a nail:) AgentofDarkness 04-17-2008, 05:18 PM ORIGINAL: JenSI are you laughin at me? lol! If you have an 06, maybe not. Check Ebay for a factory service manual. I have one for my car and its really helpful. If you have access to a torque wrench, use it since you don't have an idea of how tight is tight enough(but make sure its accurate, my friend broke two bolts on my cylinder head using an inaccurate torque wrench) JenSI 04-17-2008, 05:27 PM ORIGINAL: AgentofDarkness Do not put it on ungodly tight, overtorqueing the bolt can strip it. I knew I was gonna need help gettin that sucker off. Now if I can just find where to put the new oil in.... I know it's under the hool.. Does it have a cap on it that says '710'? hahahahha I'm joking! Seen that as a blonde joke one day.. OIL upside down.. haha. Ok, enough. Yes, don't want to get it too tight.. note taken. I am usingMobil-1 5w30 Synthetic oil.. is that cool? I'm questioning my transmission fluid next... my 3rd to 4th gear is weird.. it doesn't pop but it slides way tooo easily. feels way different then the other gears. I read where someone said you should use Synthetic tranny fluid and that it will help it.... Am I right or did I miss quote what I heard? And if so... will it even really make a difference? guess I should be posting that under another forum.. but I have dial up and it takes forever! lol GReddy_Civic 04-17-2008, 05:29 PM I never could get the oil filter off with a filter wrench, so i used the adjustable strap one. I always use 10w30 oil but its not synthetic, i dont know if that makes a differnece or not but dont break a nail, and be careful if you do it in a skirt:D AgentofDarkness 04-17-2008, 05:31 PM Your Oil cap should say what weight of oil to use. If its not on the oil cap, it will be in the owner's manual for sure. Its good to use Synthetic oil. As far as the tranny problem goes, if the car is under warranty, take it to the dealer and have them fix it. Make sure you have the problem documented under warranty and save all documentation. Also save the documentation of the oil change, put it in a log book if possible. You can change the transmission fluid, I hear Synchromax works good but I've never tried it before. Check owner's manual for the weight of oil to use. Synthetic oil is thinner, so it should work better in the trans as it will leave the space between the synchros faster and make the shifts smoother. Skirt what?!to change oil? LOL! nope, shorts and tank... I just know that oil is gonna get me in the face.Yes, I have nails.. I'm probably the biggest girlie girl... but I grew up with 4 brothers who think they are hard a**es and have had to defend myself.. So I can hold my own and got that little tomboy side goin =) JenSI 04-17-2008, 05:41 PM ORIGINAL: AgentofDarkness ORIGINAL: JenSI are you laughin at me? lol! I've only had one oil change done on it. and I know they used 5w20.. which I heard that was okay for it cuz it was winter.. that is why I'm changing and also goin synthetic. Far as the tranny.. I did take it to the dealer.. but they think I'm nuts. lol. They told me nothin is wrong with it.. but honestly.. it just doesn't feel like it did when I first got it.. It started bout week after I had it. Ya, know how u just know the feel of ur car. Maybe there is nothing wrong with it.. but I don't think usin synthetic in it would be a bad thing.. actually better for like you said. Last summer I was 90% sure I had a front wheel bearing going (1997 with 135,000km...no surprise there) The "service manager" refused to give me a straight answer ("If my car made these noises under these conditions, could it be _________?") and said that they would have to take it for a test drive to be sure. called "diagnosing" then they would have to put it on the hoist to double check that. Called "inspecting". I asked if that was included in the labor to change the damned wheel bearing. They said no...so I said "**** you, I'm never setting foot in here again, no matter how stuck I am!" and I havn't...don't even drive on their lot to look at cars! Best of luck with the oil change and the TSB...let us know how it all goes |
