For the past 3 weeks i have been working on my 91 lx. it all started by just replacing the valve cover gasket. that led to adjusting the valves which led to a new distributor which led to new heater hoses. so after i got it all back together and readdy the battery dies. i jumped and in doing so i blew up the alternator that is only 2 years old.

it makes me think what is going to happen next. before i finish anything else is there any tips on anything else i should while im in the process.

anything like this ever happen to you

I'm rebuildilng my 86 crx right now, and I just finished putting the head back together and replacing a few hoses.  It doesn't pass smog right now.  I'm going to deal with it using the rationale that after I put some more money into the car, it'll go longer without a broken part than a used car I could've gotten for the same amount of money.  Those come with their own set of problems.  I won't bother comparing to a new car since that'd be 20x the cost and it'd lose about half that value in 5 years (whereas my car can't lose much more value)

how did your alternator blow up?

My guess is that when i jumped the battery it sent a big surge through the alternator and smoked some stuff inside. it really smelled when i took it off. now thats just what i think happened.

the alternator was a remanufactured.

that's strange, you should have a fuse between your battery and your alternator precisely for this reason.   A blown anything is probably more expensive and harder to access than a fuse

My rebuilt alternator from AutoZone has a lifetime warranty. Is there any chance you have a similar warranty? Call the store you bought it from and find out. Maybe you'll get a good surprise!

Tell them to give you a different alternator?
