nitrous, that kind of stuff!

Silver Civic -> nitrous, that kind of stuff! (4/23/2008 8:34:48 PM)

alright, so here's the dilemma. i'm running a D16Z6 SOHC and i'm not particularly interested in a swap to another series, nor am i particularly interested in submitting to the boost route of either a turbo or a supercharger. i am however, interested in putting some nitrous on my car. i'm running the universal intake, headers, exhaust set up. new intake manifold ( skunk2 ) coming soon, planning to get new spark plug wires and spark plugs.

i think after the research that it'd be safest to put a 55 Dry Shot on my car, ( preferably of the ZEX brand ). i'm looking to get an increase in horsepower with the most minimal risk of damaging my internals. i've heard that to put anything more than a 55 shot would require new pistons and rods but i'm not entirely positive. could someone shine light on this situation for me?

i appreciate it.

i put nitrous on my 96 ex and one day i was driving normal when booya i shot a connector rod right out the bottom of the engine, i wasnt using the nitro at the time but i think it weakend the rods. My car had 130k so maybe they where just old but beefing up the internal might save you an engine (or blow it and swap in a b16 like me!)

With putting nitrous on a d, just like any other engine.  Is how much you know, how prepared you are, and how safe your set up is.  I have a zex window switch, msd ignition, the zex dry shot so it has the wot switch built in, arp headstuds, aem v2, dc sports 4-1, magnaflow catback with ebay test pipe.  I run 2 step colder plugs and 91 octane.  Unfortuneatly my car was totaled 3 days ago so I never got to test it,  I was going to race this week but now I can't...  Do a compression test, leakdown test, and make sure your car is not burning any oil or coolant.  Buy a few books on nitrous before you actually buy anything.  I suggust "Sports compact nitrous injection" by joe pettit.

Good author!  I'm reading his superchargers for sc's right now.  Learned more in two days than I did in a year of forums.  Boosting shouldn't even be considered before buying ARP headstuds and a new oem headgasket.  I got headlift and blew my gasket within the first 10 minutes of driving my boosted car producing only around 150whp at the time, even with perfect compression and leakdown tests.

How so, its not like nitrous is cheap? It can easily run you 2k. But is cheaper than a turbo dont get me wrong, but you cant say it in that context.

Mr Mobsta Man -> RE: nitrous, that kind of stuff! (5/8/2008 6:32:10 PM)

Whats wrong with paying a lot less for the same amount of hp? I would say that if you take the turbo, swap, or buying a car with a bigger engine route just because it costs more I think you are pretty stupid.
