I know that internal wastegates are on the turbo itself and that external wastegates are on the manifold before the turbo and they both relieve exhuast pressure in order to control boost. From what I have read external wastegates seem to be a bit more reliable so my question is is this a myth or no. I am also curious if you can run a boost controller on both of these types of wastegates or just internal wastegates? And finally assuming you dont change the boost level and leave it on what it is tuned for are Boost controllers potentially harmful can they cause a sudden boost spike destroying the engine?SHould you only change boost via different wastegate springs? Any help would be great for my turbo build this summer hopefully.

Does anyone know?

only change using springs, boost controllers are bad news, especially if you like showing off (aka, upping the boost)

Ugh.
Boost controllers are a wonderful and very simple invention. They are wonderful news, I don't know the heck this place picked up the recent influx of boost controllers are bad.
The only thing a boost controller does is change the boost level that the wastegate opens up at. That is it, the end. The irresponsibility of the owner who doesn't tune for the boost that he's trying to run does not make the boost controller "bad news." It just makes the owner an idiot.

and i'm pretty sure you can use them for both internal and extrenal

i know there a good thing:D, it's just that a bunch of immature kids have been going around on here and always asking how to boost their cars, and considering they will most likely keep upping the boost, it will end up screwing up something. if they do in fact know what their doing, then i'm all for it. and yes, there are a lot of idiots in this world.

just to add on to this, if they know what they're doing, they're obviously not going to ask about it... which is probably why you don't see many positive responses about boost controllers here.;)

boost controllers are freakin AWESOME... especially digital ones like on a hondata s300, apexi avcr, etc...
you can put a 6 pound spring in for dding and when you feel like romping on it turn the boost up to where you were tuned at on the dyno... no more!!!
example... 6pound spring, and your tuned to 15pounds, you can turn your boost controller up to the 15lbsor at 6lbs depending on how much power you feel like running, saves on your motor so you dont have to be romping on it if you dont need to be (just an opinion)
basically your stuck between the minimum boost (your spring pressure) and what your max boost that your car been tuned to. any more and your an idiot, and you cant go any less so whatever.
electric boost controller can actually control boost via rpm or gear, or freakin both! like 1st 6lbs, 2nd 10lbs, 3rd 15lbs etc... for better traction on launches.
im really bad at explaining htings, but thats my attempt at boost controllers
