Hey everyone, I recently bought a 97 civic HX. I was wondering whether or not it was a VTEC....to my understanding the HX came standard with a VTEC but mine doesnt say it on the engine, instead it just says "HONDA"...so i was wondering if maybe it had an engine swap with the previous owner???? or is that just how some of the civic engines are? I appreciate your help..thanks.

Im no expert on the HX, but it is my understanding that it is a VTEC-E motor. this is a lesser version of VTEC than is found on the ex or si models. It is more geared toward gas efficiency than power. I think it is rated around 117hp, not bad compared to the non-vtec motors rated at 106hp. im not sure about a swap, but i do know that not all vtec motors come with VTEC stamped across the valve cover.

yeah, its a vtec but not written on the valve cover I guess.

Good to see someone else with my car! I LOVE my HX, and yes, it is VTEC-E, and does NOT say so anywhere on the engine. Honda is the most it says. Bums me out, ya know? But the HX is a CHOICE car, you can stick to those low rpms and follow your HX-only "upshift indicator", or kick it up and kick some ass. i can shift from 1st to 2nd at 3800, sometimes higher if conditions are nice, and you can get to top speed in 4th. The 97 HX can accelerate faster than the 97 stock EX, LX, and DX. It also is the only civic with stock alloy rims. :) weighing in at 2,200 lbs, this car is fast when you want it to be. The rims weigh a mere 11 something pounds too, as opposed to typical light 15lb rims. Touring tires really help, if you're not into low-pros.

i use to have a HX auto, i loved it, but i sold it cause the window motor wires shorted out, but my buddy that has it now is gettin that fix, its been around i had it and sold it to my buddy and hes done sold it to another buddy, everybody loves that car. good pick!

Yes, the HX is a v-tec equipped engine. Either known as V-tec2 or Vtec-e. Car runs on 12 valves until either 2800 rpm (heavy throttle) or 3000 rpm just cruising. And once you get up past there, v-tec stays in the whole time. Great fuel usage and a decent amount of power.

97hxxx- you really need a reality check. I have a '98 hx, and no, the d16y5 did not have 117hp. It had 115; the 2001+ hx with the d17 came with 117. And no, a stock ek hx is NOT faster than a stock ek ex, no matter how much you think it is. The transmission is simply not meant for launches. The weight difference does not make up for the hx's tall gearing. And I think the hx weighs closer to 2400lbs. But yeah, I agree, it's a nice stock car.
