TheShimster91HB -> 95 Civic dx turbo vs 96 prelude srv (5/8/2008 1:31:51 AM)

First a little background on my car...95 civic coupe, manual tranny with the oh so powerful stock d15b7 power plant. Just finished installing a custom kit pieced together by yours truly.  The turbo is a Garrett .42/.48 off an old volvo, interally gated at 7 psi. Most of the other components are from ebay [:'(] but i am very meticulous in my selection process. Fuel management is handled by the lowly FMU (let the flaming begin). The only thing not installed by me was the downpipe which i had fabricated at a shop.

The opponent: 96 Prelude with the H22A1 with I/H/E.

It was cold out tonight, just cold enough to see your breath. On the way home after getting off work at 12AM I get a call from my buddy who wants to see my new set up. I oblige and we decide to meet at a local hangout. I get there not only to see my friend's lexus, but also another eg coupe and a 96 prelude belonging to two other guys i know. As their jealousy continues to grow while they marvel the little boosted SOHC, we all decide i should race my buddies friends prelude.

We make three passes down a smooth abandoned road. The first was from 50 KM/h to about 140. I downshift to second and we both punch it. I am swiftly reminded by my seat that two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time, but in this moment it sure feels like that rule is being tested. Right before i shift to third i notice my boost gauge only reading about 3-4 psi [&:]. I look over to see the prelude ahead by a fender and just inching ahead of me just as we let off. I pull over to see how my set up took the beating and see the charge pipe from the turbo popped out of the coupler a little. Nothing a few good twists of my trusty screwdriver cant fix.

With the pipes ready to deliver full boost we go again. From the same starting speed we downshift and send the sweet sounds of our exhausts echoing into the peaceful night. Third gear comes quickly as we are dead nuts even. Boost gauge pegged at 7 psi the civic creeps ahead ever so slowly. Finally I throw the shifter to fourth gear and look to see the prelude about a half car back. We let off and slow down as we are quickly approaching a dead end.

Third race was from a light, and let me say that i have not had the chance to practice my launches with my new found power.
Light turns green and the prelude chirps off the line, promtly leaving me with my tires squealing and my car not moving.[:D]

We headed back to the hangout to discuss said races mentioned above. In effort to guess how much horsepower the lil engine is producing we compared weight ratios and estimated that im making around 170-180ish to the crank. Considering that stock is only 102hp I think i can be pretty proud of those numbers on a stock motor. We called it a night and i drove home with a whole new appreciation for my tiny 1.5 liter monster. If only I had my ecu tuned I could see the full potential.[:(]
Comments and questions welcome...flamers are inevitable.

Your numbers sound about perfect.  I made 150whp/150wtq out of 8psi on a t3 .48 DYNO TUNED.  People will talk down about street racing, and I tend to agree with their opinions on it, but the moderators of this site created a section for it so screw it.  Good job on the build, I value quality parts above all else, but i'm also a fan of running a crap motor into the ground and rebuilding with bigger and better parts.

Thanks for confirming my number estimate. I agree with the whole street racing issue and in this situation the only ones who could get hurt were ourselves. I cant wait for the local dragstrip to open up so i can see how i fare. Gotta practice my launches tho.

You should write a book lol, dude you tell that like its right out of a story, had it pictured in my head. nice

Thanks man, that means a lot. You should read SovXietday's racing threads too, they are even better I would say. The funny thing is that i could not tell this story verbally if my life depended on it.[:D]

so you were just spinning at the stop light...lol? Ya i need to practice my launches too. Btw how much did you build cost, im looking to run a setup like that. I really only want about 180-200 hp. A good tune should get you to 200

TheShimster91HB -> RE: 95 Civic dx turbo vs 96 prelude srv (5/13/2008 10:53:44 PM)

By the time I got my car moving from the light the prelude was already watching the intersection growing small in his rear view mirror.
I added up the cost of all the parts and it came to roughly $1600 ish. I actually wish i had invested more in a better quality manifold as the one i have has "re-enforcing brackets" that are bending.[&:]

didder -> RE: 95 Civic dx turbo vs 96 prelude srv (5/16/2008 2:38:14 PM)

might i suggest some traction control bars for your launches, they eliminate wheel hop and greatly help your 60' time at the track [;)]

and i thought d15b7's had 130hp, not 105... or am i mistaken? and does your motor have vtec? im curious because i coulda SWORE they had 130hp...

TheShimster91HB -> RE: 95 Civic dx turbo vs 96 prelude srv (5/16/2008 7:47:18 PM)

I have practiced launching at different rpms and I am getting the hang of it. Im heading to the track for the first time tomorrow so ill post my ET, mph, and 60' times.

"D15B7 - Power : 102 hp (76 kW) @ 6200 rpm & 98 ft·lbf @ 3800 rpm" <-- straight from Wikipedia.

You may be thinking of the D15B which is a jdm engine that makes 130 hp.[;)]

didder -> RE: 95 Civic dx turbo vs 96 prelude srv (5/16/2008 11:16:59 PM)

yes i was thinkin the jdm version... i thought you either did a swap or the previous owner did. thank u for clearing that up, and good luck tomorrow.. i hope you pull in the 14's [8D]
