You can change just the filter. When the engine is not running, almost all of the oil sits in the bottom of the pan, the rest is in the filter. So some will spill out but it will be the same amount that comes out were you to remove the filter with the pan empty. Pour new oil into your new filter before putting it on. When you start an engine with a new empty filter, it doesn't get any oil until the filter fills up.
