A wet versus dry compression test should be done to distinguish a bad piston ring from a blown head gasket.

Here's where to start:

Is replacing the engine an option that you have considered?

I would rather fix this engine, I have already put in a new water pump and timeing belt.
And other then cylinder 1 it'sa good engine.

If itis cheaper to get a used enginethen maybe, but at a junk yard you dont know what your getting.

cr-v 97-01
