Default Cruising at 5000rpm???

I have a b16a2 with the stock tranny. when im on the highway, crusiing at what my speedo says is about 65-70mph, im revving at 5-5500rpm.... talk about losing gas. The tranny also has a bad third gear. it clunks everytime i shift into it.

So im deciding between beating the tranny till it breaks and get a gsr tranny or just get a longer final gear and fix third.

How much would each way run me? and which would be better?

i dont think it should be reven that high.......... most motor/tranny are designed to run about 3K rpm at about 65mph. sounds to me like your tranny is about to take a dive because its not shifting into OD or 4th one or the other...

Huh? Its called a manual transmision. They are all designed to rev differently. Hes talking about driving in 5th gear. Op,you are revving WAY too high. At 65-70 you should be seeing 3500-4000 rpms tops. Do you have like 14" wheels with crazy low profile tires? I actually have the same problem. Same motor and tranny. Im thinking about going to an LS tranny with long gears for better mileage and lower revs.

ya my 94 SOHC 5speed manual still did 65mph at 2.5-2.75k RPMs

not positive about DOHC motors but youd think the gearing would be pretty similar.... sounds like somethings not shifting properly for reven that high....

Well shorter gearing is much better for going fast so dx trannys and the like will slow you down but at this point in time people are starting to want mpg's over speeed.

It may be a little more than 70mph, to me its 130km/h.

The car runs really well at that speed and theres lots of power, but i would rather be able to cruise at 3000-3500 rpms.

Whats a solution to this?

and they are 14's but with regular tires on them. there fairly new too.

I want to get the stock 15' rims from 2000+ civic for my car. Would this help at all? i no i would have to change up the speedo.
