i'm not sure if it would cause that to happen, but do you have the ground from the tranny to the frame hooked up?

On later models, there are grounds on the thermostat housing and the transmission. Carefully double check those grounds.

Are you saying that the starter is not cranking the engine or that the starter is cranking but not the engine is not firing up? If the latter is true, do you have spark and is the fuel pump priming?

The big wire from battery (-) to the frame and then on to the transmission is not working. The starter current is trying to pass thru the little wire on the valve cover, which should not happen.

If a wire is smoking you need larger gauge wire replace the wire and you might have it running.
