Adjustment on a clutch
Can anyone tell me if a clutch on a 98 is adjustable? I feel as if it starts to grab at about midway to a little higher. Im kinda new to a 5spd, ive driven them before but never on a daily basis, so im not sure if it is supposed to grab midway or lower than that. If it is adjustable, then I will see a mechanic to adjust it for me.
Thanks! |
RE: Adjustment on a clutch
no, a 98 has a hydraulic clutch, so it adjusts itself. so its one of two things. either the clutch is wearing out, or you just havent gotten the feel for this particular car. if it gets worse, or seems to take a long time for it to grab after a hard shift, then look into getting a new clutch put in.

RE: Adjustment on a clutch
thats what I thought ok then thanks....
It may be that maybe im still not used to it the car has 44k miles on it so I thought it just needed to be adjusted. Thanks for the info !!! |
RE: Adjustment on a clutch
yeah, at 44k, its highly unlikely that the clutch is worn. my original one went almost 120k before i had to replace it.

RE: Adjustment on a clutch
one tip, on most hydraulic clutches (in my experience) you should depress the clutch the minimum amount possible to put the car into gear. if you are depressing the clutch to the floor every time you shift, it will give the clutch pedal a loose feel and you will have to push the pedal further than normal to shift gears.

RE: Adjustment on a clutch
yeah, but if you try to push it the minimum, then you will occassionally grind the gears, and that is really hard on the tranny.

RE: Adjustment on a clutch
i dont disagree, but that is why i said the minimum possible. gotta find that happy medium where it works. all about knowing your car. he'll figure it out i'm sure.

RE: Adjustment on a clutch
Exactly what Im trying to find the mid way where I can put the car in gear and not grind the tranny
Ive been trying to get comfortable with it and I think once i get the midway down packed Ill enjoy it to the fullest. Thanks for the help guys pics coming soon just looking to get my suspension soon |
RE: Adjustment on a clutch
I'm having the same problem. I own a Honda Civic 1996 CXI (Hatch) and it's my first manual vehicle... and to get into first gear I'm finding that I have to put the clutch to the floor otherwise it won't go into gear. But with other gears it's not as particular.. as it will go into gear with the clutch not so far in.

RE: Adjustment on a clutch
My gears go in fine its just that i think i pull out the clutch to quick or I am miss judging the grabbing point on the clutch, so the car tends to jerk a bit when I shift
