View Full Version : Cold Air Intake
Ray012874 06-14-2005, 11:14 AM Hey Guys,
Need a question answered?
I want to get the AEM CAI for my 2005 Civic. It's an automatic. Will the AEM CAI work on an automatic? I don't want to get it before find out.
thanks.

ngoti 8tor 06-14-2005, 02:01 PM Yes, it will work on an automatic, and it'll let your engine "breathe" a lot easier.
Nail I3unny 06-14-2005, 03:44 PM not to mention the added 5-8 hp and increced gas milage...and we all know how much everyone wants better gas milage
ngoti 8tor 06-14-2005, 04:47 PM I don't know about 5-8 HP........I would think more like 2-4 HP on a Civic. But it'll definitely be easier on your engine. Next you should upgrade your exhaust since your engine will be able to suck in more air, your exhaust should be 2.25" to let that added air out.
Ray012874 06-16-2005, 11:34 AM Thanks guys.
Exhaust is next.

no the AEM CAI V2 has been dyno proven to give you 5-8
Ray012874 06-16-2005, 03:53 PM I'm tempted to get the AEM CAI V2 but I live in New York. In the summer it's great but when the rain falls, I'm worried water will get in the engine.
Is it easy to uninstall the CAI or should I get the water by pass valve to solve this issues?
mill$civic 06-18-2005, 01:00 PM if your worried about water get a bypass valve or a water proof filter cover
sacicons 06-18-2005, 01:18 PM a water proof filter cover? umm. wouldnt that stop air from going in too?

Never heard of a water proof filter cover before. Do you mean a plastic bag?
And as sacicons said above, wouldnt that stop air from going in too?
mill$civic 06-19-2005, 12:04 PM ngoti8tor....i have seen them at Canadian tire before, there made by apc or ractive or somthing like that and there not sopposed to block the air but stop water, iv never seen anyone with them ether so i guess there not a big hit
sacicons 06-19-2005, 02:30 PM oh ok. just a plastic cover that goes around the filter? yeah, i doubt they do much. and you dont need to worry about water getting into your engine unless you go througgh a puddle and it puts the whole filter under. if its just some spray on the filter, it wont hurt it. actually, its kinda good to get a little spray in there every now and then. water breaks up carbon deposits in your engine. and POLO708 has a setup that injects a mist of water into the intake to cool the temps from his SC. its only when you get enough water in there that the piston moving up doesnt have enough air to compress (water doesnt compress) and the excess pressure can blow the side of the block out. or bend Con-Rods.
Ray012874 06-20-2005, 01:33 PM Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I want to hook up my ride for the ride of month contest.
Nail I3unny 06-20-2005, 01:45 PM if you're really THAT worried about hydro lock then get the original AEM CAI. you can buy a water bypass valve that (when water gets into the filter) it'll 'bypass' the air intake to another part of the pipe. some group of guys did a test on it when it first came out. they submerged the entire filter in a 10 gallon fish tank and didnt get any water in the engine.
gunmetal 06-20-2005, 10:26 PM I got a K & N CAI for my 2002 Civic EX sedan and it came with a cover for the filter. Made of fine material like silk screen. Tried with or without and couldn't tell a difference. Easy to take off but you have to lift the car and put it back on from underneath. So I leave it on. Repels water good. Got it for $230.00.

Now that sounds cool, would panty hose work?
Ray012874 06-21-2005, 12:18 PM Thanks guys. I'm off to get the CAI. But another question popped up in my mind...Is there a difference between Short Ram Intake and Cold Air Intake? Which one is better?
ngoti 8tor 06-21-2005, 01:30 PM Short Ram takes air from your engine compartment (warm air), while CAI takes air from inside your fender and wheel well (cooler more dense air). You get more HP from cooler air.
Nail I3unny 06-21-2005, 02:06 PM short ram is a shorter pipe that draws air from the engine bay. depending on the CAI...it will draw from the wheel well or behind the front bumper. advantages of each:
ORIGINAL: me!!!! (on another thread)
the CAI will increce your gas mileage, help your engine run cooler, and give you more HP. on the other end of it, the Ram intake is cheaper, gives you more of a torque gain, and is easier to install. i guess its up to prefrence
Ray012874 06-22-2005, 11:06 AM Thanks guys. Well, I went to SpeedWorld and they had to order the Injen Cold Air Intake for my civic. They are installing it today. I can't wait.
Thanks for the advice.
corye03 06-22-2005, 01:00 PM why don't you try to install it yourself, they are really easy...
Nail I3unny 06-22-2005, 02:15 PM yeah its basically rip out the old box put in the new pipe
Ray012874 06-22-2005, 03:28 PM Well, originally I was going to do that but since I'm a regular there, they didn't charge alot. Besides, they usually give me freebies.
Ray012874 06-23-2005, 12:09 PM Well, I took my car for installation of the Cold Air Intake but it was too late so they couldn't do it.
On the advise of Corye03 and NailI3unny, I told them to refund my installation fee and so I'm going to attempt to install it myself.
Pretty excited too 'cause I'm gonna proud to do it mysef. Thanks for the encouragement guys.

That-a-BOY! There is NOTHING better than the feeling you get after doing a job like this, i can promise you that. Even tho this wont seem complicated, the fact that you did it yourself is just downright gratifying. One thing you should always do, is double, triple, and quadruple check everything as you put it back together. ...i didnt do that once, and i almost paid the price for it, but that was a brake job which is way more dangerous if you dont hook it up right
Ray012874 06-23-2005, 03:00 PM Yeah, there is a feeling that you get...oh wait, that's my wife. j/k
thanks again. If I have any questions, I'm sure you guys will help out.
Nail I3unny 06-23-2005, 05:47 PM yeah good choice on installing it yourself! have fun...and get some pics up when ur done
Ray012874 06-24-2005, 11:09 AM Well, I installed CAI yesterday. It WAS pretty easy to install. The most difficult part was taking out the air box. Well, I installed, double checked and triple checked it. Turn it on and I was off.
I'm very satisfied with it and so it my wife. I got my refund. My wife wants me to get a spoiler so since she paid for the CAI, I'm paying for the spoiler.
Thanks again:)
Ray012874 06-24-2005, 11:10 AM I will post pics tomorrow.
Forty04 06-24-2005, 11:52 AM what kind of spoiler, please no big obnoxious park bench size chunks of metal...
corye03 06-24-2005, 12:24 PM no prob, pat yourself on the back when its done, i just made my short ram into a cold air, ahh its nice a HOT engine, yet cooooool pipe...i think all around, from low rpms to high ones the CAI is great, I know my short ram didnt do much...ill get some pics soon, busy with work and life...dont worry they're coming though.
You'll feel a sense of accomplishment which is a great feeling, it's not the same if ur car is gone for a day, then thats on, just doesnt feel like u did anything, to ME at least.
corye03 06-24-2005, 12:28 PM woops i guess it is done, great job man! dont ya feel awesome? post some pics too
Ray012874 06-24-2005, 12:32 PM This is the spoiler my wife wants. It's not too bad. I don't think it's crazy.

Ray012874 06-24-2005, 12:34 PM Yeah, I feel good about it. It looks great too.
Funny cause I was all greased up like if I had changed the whole motor. My wife was laughing.
I'm posting pics tomorrow.
corye03 06-24-2005, 12:34 PM good choice;)
Forty04 06-24-2005, 02:13 PM Excellent choice on the spoiler, thats pretty much what i have on my car and its perfect
jafferman2004 06-24-2005, 07:32 PM i just got a new CAI also i dont know how to install it yet but i was wondering if i can fit a AEM air bypass valve on a non aem intake system?
jafferman2004 06-24-2005, 07:52 PM also can someone help me go through this and help me install it myself :) what kinda things should i look for and do
Nail I3unny 06-24-2005, 08:23 PM what year model is your car
jafferman2004 06-24-2005, 08:39 PM its a 95 4 door , like i fit it in but im not sure what the extra tubing and the caseing is for lol
Nail I3unny 06-24-2005, 08:46 PM does it have a sunroof?
or maybe i can ask you straight up...is it an EX or an LX
jafferman2004 06-24-2005, 09:24 PM it doesnt have a sunroof but its a 4 door special edition [:o] but im pretty sure its a lx
this is pretty much what i got

Nail I3unny 06-24-2005, 10:06 PM yeah if it doesnt have a sunroof then its an LX.
well...i cant find a picture to help you...but basically all you do is pull out the stock box and everything attatched to it and put in the pipe. easy.
jafferman2004 06-25-2005, 04:25 PM see the problem is i dont see where or how that smaller pipe goes theres no room for it to go down
jafferman2004 06-25-2005, 06:02 PM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/jafferman2004/000_0133.jpg

Ray012874 06-26-2005, 12:20 AM Here are the pics of the CAI I installed on Thursday. I also added a strut bar. take a look.

corye03 06-26-2005, 03:03 AM im pretty sure thats a Short Ram Air...I think a Cold Air Intake goes in the passenger side of the front bumper right in front of the wheel well...

see i have this extra metal tube and i have no clue where it goes cuz their's a airduct in the way
corye03 06-26-2005, 03:54 PM yea, it goes down that airduct, u take off the front bumper and take out the entire box, completely remove it, then just connect the pipes and install...
jafferman2004 06-26-2005, 06:46 PM what kinda difference will it make from the setup that it has now and how do i take off that bumper :D
corye03 06-26-2005, 10:48 PM right now you are getting warm air from your engine bay, if u do CAI its actually cool to the touch after it runs, cus it gets colder air, i bet if u touch your short ram after it runs its hot, colder air equals more horsepower
jafferman2004 06-27-2005, 12:08 AM interesting lol i will have a look tommorow thanks alot how do i take off the bumper :P
