Hi, i just got my new 05 Civic (comes with standard radio):

I've got a JBL GT4 series 1000watt sub and a An Alpine M350 (760 watt amp). Im planning on changing the head unit soon, but for the time being would i be able to install the amp and sub, and conenct them up to the standard radio already in the civic?

Im an absolute beginner, anyone got any ideas/guides on how to do so? How do i run the wires from the boot to the head unit (do i need to rip off the side panels and pass them behind them?? this wont damage nething will it??). And how would i be able to get wires to the head unit?? coz i dont see any simple way of being able to simply pull it out to plug the correect wires into it.. etc..

Any help would be much appreciated.

You don't need to run anything to the headunit. You will need a Hi-Lo signal converter. Basically what that does is convert a high signal (speaker wire) to a low signal (RCA output). Just tap into your rear speakers for the signal.

As far as the rest, you need to run about 8 gauge power wire from the battery and find something that is switched 12v (meaning it comes on with the key) to run to the remote turn on of the amp. Then find a good solid ground to the chassis adn scrape away any paint from it. Try to keep your ground as short as possible.

Run the wires behind the kick panels and then under the carpet along the door jamb.

Do it right. Use 4 Gauge wire. 760watts is going to be starved thru 8 gauge wire. Go 4 gauge. Trust me. DCA and REmmy will back me up.

cheers for the help guys..... but as i said, im a total beginner and half that stuff just means nothin to me... sorry if this is wastin ur time or a bit tedious for you, but as i said, any help si better than nothing so is much appreciated.

ur syain basically find the wires that run to the rear speakers... hook these up to the amp (and then all i need to do is hook the amp up to the battery)? Does this cut off the rear speakers? Or do i have to connect them to the amp as i would with the subwoofer?? Are you sure this won't affect my rear speakers in terms of quality etc..

And whats all the 8 gauge, 4 gauge stuff???? No Idea... sorry guys.. lol

K.... bit more clued up now after spednin quite a while on google! lol..

yep.. so i know how to tap in to the speakers... and im gonna change the amp. Im gettin a Sony XM-D500X amp that gives 250 Watt RMS x 1 (this should be perfect for my sub..... coz thats 250 RMS)... is that right? ne1....

and i've found somehwere i can get a Hi/Lo converter... but whats all this abotu 4 gauge and 8 gauge... and how do i ground the amp??

The gauge of wire is the size. The smaller the gauge, the bigger the wire. The higher the wattage rating of your amp, the more power it will draw from your battery and subsequently will need bigger power wire.

If you haven't bought your amp yet I suggest you get a class D mono block amp. They are specifically designed to run subs and it'll be a lot easier on the alternator.

Grounding means literally connecting it to the frame of the car. Pull your carpet up and find a spot on the body as close to where you are going to mount the amp as you can. Scrape the paint off to get to bare metal and then bolt/screw the ground wire to that spot. Careful you dont drill into something important. If you are worried about drilling/screwing, find an existing bolt. A good ground is important.

The XM-D500X looks like the perfect companion for my JBL GT4-12 Subwoofer. Its also a Class D Mono block amplifier too, n it takes High Level input i think (so i wouldn't need a Hi/Lo convertor... would i)

So.... street sniper.... what gauge wire would i need to use for that?? Im only going to be connecting the (250W RMS) subwoofer to that amp... thats all. Im gonna leave the factory fitted speakers... they should be okay for now.

What do you rekon?
