So i was planning on getting the Alpine cda-9884 from sonicelectronix, but i had a few questions first.
Will i have to crimp or solder wires no mater what?
I heard that you needed to keep the stock radio in order to keep the remote entry system. If so what wires do I have to keep conected and where should I put the stock headunit?

Btw, my car is a 99 civic ex coupe

 

on the 99 you do not have to keep the stock stereo. that only applies to 96-98 civics.

and yes you will have to make connections no matter what. you will need to purchase a radio wiring harness for 98+ Hondas, and preferably solder the wires to the harness that comes with the radio. everything should be just matching wire colors.

 

Glad i don't have to keep the stock radio lol.

solder not needed really just strip and crimp and tape. as long as you crimp them tight shouldnt ever be a problem. ive never soldered wires on the radio harness just to much hassle to solder and heat shrink every wire when its not really needed. only wires that i really solder are important computer wires.

 

well dont just use tape on them..... you need crimp connectors at least! otherwise a hot summer day can melt the glue on the tape and the tape just falls off leaving exposed wires behind the dash. definatly not good

 

I am all about overkill. If I don't solder/heatshrink, I'll crimp and use electrical tape along with zip ties to relieve stress on the wires. Lately, I have been using a little Kopr-shield on my wires prior to crimping to provide an additional barrier against oxidation. One of my friends who is an electrician turned me on to Kopr-shield and I have been using it since! There is another lubricant that does the same thing as Kopr-shield but it doesn't conduct.... The name escapes me at the moment.

 

I actually just put in an alpine deck into my 99 dx hatchback and i just crimped and used electrical tape and i was set.

 

ya solder is just to much work IMO for a regular radio none the less.....
for a stereo wire its gotta be over 4gauge for me to solder the terminals. and 1/0gauge soldering sucks.LOL

 

If all you guys crimped them and it has worked fine i probably will do the same because i have a ton of wire crimpers around the house.
I'm pretty comfortable with wiring so that part shouldn't be a problem. I just wanted to know if i would need to crimp or solder, so i knew what i was going up against and what i needed. The only thing i'm sorta wondering about is removing the whole lower dash.

There really is no shortcut? (kinda like removing as few panels as possible)

If it is anything like my 1997, you need to remove a whole bunch of stuff just to get to the radio.
