How to get around the earthing problem on a dvd player
Hi guys, been a while since I visited the site, lots of changes...
Basically I got this dvd player LCD screen touch pad radio all in one gizmo ting. I plugged it in and it plays all good, only problem is the dvd doesnt play at all let alone when the handbrake is up.
This is the model

My question is how do I hook it up so I can get visual and more importantly how do I get around the problem of earthing the thing so I dont have to have the handbrake on everytime I wanna watch DVD?
If anyone can solve this problem and tell me how to do it you are a saint
Thanks in advance

Toggle switch to ground?
ETA: If you do this and leave your handbrake connected, make sure you use a diode so that your dash light does not show that your handbrake is up when using the toggle switch.

ok I got it working but then it stopped working when I took it out again and put the metal casing in. I took it out again and put the old stereo in and that didnt work either. I think it could be the fuse which cut out? any ideas?
how do i change the fuse?
such a mission its 1.30 am but i'm on it. any help guys thanks

Some units don't respond well to the constant ground, hence the toggle switch. In other words, some DVD players see the constant ground on the handbrake as an attempt to bypass the handbrake safety feature. In fact, some units require that you apply the handbrake, release the handbrake, then apply it again before it will let the video show.
Going further, units like the top of the line Pioneer will use the GPS to determine your speed and kill your video when you reach a particular speed.
Sorry if the above doesn't make sense because I just took a ton of allergy medicine....

You're making perfect sense, Gunz.
I think the OP has a frayed wire or two and has blown a fuse. Besides the obvious "radio" fuse under the dash (feeds the red wire which is on/off with ignition), most models feed the radio yellow wire (constant 12v) from a 7.5 amp fuse in the box under the hood.

OK my American counterparts...The beast is working fine now after an almighty mission involving cut up fingers, late nights, wife beatings (I know she loves me really), heartache and finally success.
So first of all you have to determine the handbrake wire colour, my case was pink. This is the wire that has to connect to handbrake to allow video play etc. Next find the earth wire. Colours vary and can be found on a logic map in the manual or on the radio. All I did was touch the pink wire and the black wire at the source, making sure it all stayed connected, before plugging it up. That worked fine. didnt have any of the problems gunz was talking about since I bought a cheap cheap model off of ebay.
How I managed to do this I dont know but I blew a fuse. These puppys are kept under the steering wheel behind the little tray (I've got the EM1 2000 civic Si/Vtec whatever you wanna call it), little red buggers that look like pins, remind you of a star trek film from the 60's. Again there's a logic map somewhere around for the fuse, find out which one is for the radio and etither get a new one or swap a redundant thing (i chose wipers even though they still work). AND BINGO!!!
Okay so I got the cheap cheap DVD player cos I just wanted the USB connectiona nd thought it might be mildly cool to watch DVDs. Drawbacks I've seen so far, the screen although cool is ****e... the colours are rubbish the font is archaic and not customizable- whats the point in that? Also a major issue is the face doesnt come off so if i'm in a dodgy area i have to take out the whole radio - joy! otherwise I've cut in half the old radios face cover and blue tacked that on to provide some cover-still a waste in my opinion as the window is worth more than the radio.
I would really have liked to go with the pioneer systems and the like but yeah they do have all sorts of silly restrictions as mentioned by gunz and also simple things like they wont play all video formats only dvd and region specific - why? CAPITALISM.
Anyway I had a lot of fun doing this and just wanted to share the experience with my bros and sis's of the civic world since there wasnt that much info i could find on the subject.
By the way youtube had a video on this that was really good, unfortunately i cant find it again.
Thanks
