Put a cubby hole in its place.

take all the panels off and it's probably screwed in there. Either that or you can buy one with a cubby in it on ebay

take panels of that's around it. then remove the screws on the side. i think theirs 4 total. I remember i had a tough time with it, tight space.

You have to pull the two screws off the lower back of the armrest, the two out of the middle of the armrest/lower center console piece, then two from the lower center console (around the cup holder piece). Then, there are 4 screws to remove (2 from each side) from where the tape deck is. You have to probably put the car into gear to pull the lower center console piece off of the cup holder, and you may have to do the same to pull the cupholder itself. Once you have that off, you'll see the other 4 screws that are holding the tape deck itself in. Remove them and it's out. Reinstallation is the reverse of installation.

You can put a plastic cubby down there. You'll just have to hit up a salvage yard to find one.
