Default question about trunk rattle?

Do you think the opening and closing of a trunk many times over the years contributes to trunk rattle? Can I take my car into a dealer and have them make my trunk close tighter?

If you ask them that, knowing dealerships they'll say you need a new trunk latch which runs about 90$ i do believe.

My car is over ten years old AND it has over 216 thousand miles on it and I don't have ANY trunk rattle to speak of. The only thing that rattled was the liscense plate because it came out of it's little slot and doesn't have any foam stripping behind it or anything so that's completely normal. However, the source of the trunk rattle that I did encounter was from that rear deck in the back window, but that's not even really associated with the trunk. I just shoved some plastic grocery bags in there to deaden vibrations. Now the only thing that rattles is my door handle.... Hmmm I have to get that fixed!!!

You should be able to adjust your trunk by yourself instead of at the dealer. They don't use any special tools to do that.

It's really easy, if you just want it to close a little tighter. You can unscrew that hook that the trunk lid catches on to. Once the screws are loose enough to wiggle the hook freely, slide it down a little lower in its place. A little adjustment should help A LOT. If you slide it down too far though, the top of the trunk lid and the rear fender (or whatever it is) they will not be flush. You can get away with the trunk lid being a little lower, but if you lower it too much, it'll be noticable and look tacky. Just fiddle with it until you get it just right. Try NOT to take it to the dealership if you can help it. Hope this helps!
