I have a bone stock 93 LX that will ping on 87 most of the time below 4,000 rpm under load. If I run 89 it will not ping. Detonation will hurt power produced, MPG and will beat up the combustion chamber. My best MPG has been achived with 91 octane ...?
Yes . . . you are better off running the lowest octane possible due to unburned deposits.
In the summer especially I hear lots of cars, (Hondas included) & trucks pinging away in city traffic. Drivers completely clueless and oblivious about it. Some rigs have knock sensors that will retard the timing.
