Default Noob question.. sorry i tried searching

tried searching looked threw about 100 pages, almost answered my question but not to the fullest

i have a 98 lx non vtec AT d16y7, i just swapped in a d16y8 from a 99 ex..
now im still using my lx non vtec ecu, the engine runs fine but no vtec of course because of the ecu
(vtec solenoid wire just hanging) is there anyway i can activate vtec without getting a new ecu?
or would it just be better to get the ecu for a d16y8?.. i heard of the vtec controllers but i have never
seen someone with a non vtec ecu use vtec via some kind of switch , is this possible? any other options?

ive seen setups where people wired the solenoid to a switch, or button, but then you still dont have the vtec fuel maps, so you dont get much power out of it, youll get a lot more with the right ecu.
