Possible vtec solenoid or soething else?

I just bought a 97 civic with a 1.6 vtec, automatic,im not sure of the exact model, but yea i can give it to ya if ya need it. Anyway i just got the car, and the owner before me said the vtec solenoid doesnt work, he said he dosnt know do much about it so i dont even know if its fixable or if i need a whole new one. When i took the car out ofter i bought it it runs fine at regular speed, until when i slam the throttle, it hits therev limiter in third gear, it does shift when i let off, but it feels all like sluggish in forthand its not really kicking in if ya know what i mean. IF it is the vtec solenoid is it fixable? Anything i can do to check, or does it sound like i need a new? Thanks for help.

i would think it's fixable, but i have no idea, are you interested in a possible engine swap, if so your money might be worth more just buying a new engine instead of fixing this one if it's gonna be a hig job. i know people on craigslist.com sell engines. me and my friend buy up engines and cars and fix them up on the side and sell them. we do this on weekends, as i have a real job. if you thinking about a new motor, you could get one anywhere from 500-2000 depending on what your looking for, i had a k20a for 3,400 but i just sold it. i wanna know how this turns out because i've never run into an engine with this problem. let me know how things go, and i wanna see what other people have to say.

vtec may not be engaging because the oil preasure is too low.
