Default First Honda Civic Hatch

Hello everone I have been doing a lot of reading on motor swaps and trannys,
Let me tell you a little about the honda I am getting!!!!! It is a 1990 civic hatch, d16 is the block thats the only numbers i know on it, It used to be an automatic, The tranny i think is out of a 91 manual, I was also told that the head is off an si, something called a mini swap? It is a sohc v-tech head on it, The check engine light is on, he said it is on due to the fact that it was an automatic and it is the torque converter clutch solenoid, now just to let you know I am a mechanic so I understand the basics, but not the actual honda terms and talk, I have heard that the v-tech will not kick on if CEL is on, also if this has upgraded head, wouldn't there be a different ecu in it?

Ok now for my questions;

1. Can i put a dohc v-tech head on a d16 block and what can I expect it to do,
2. If I can, I wanted to turbo it and call it good,

3. If those don't work I was gonna drive it like it is until summer and blow it and tell my wife it was really old and get I was thinking A B18? Not sure what else to get with it, I know I want it to be fast but still daily driver.

4. Which motor is the best to turbo?

5. And what does ITR or GSR stand for along with the letters after the engine code Like d16(y1)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i'm not sure about the CEL causing VTEC to not work, but i've heard some variation of that issue before
You need the ECU that goes to the head for VTEC to work.

non-applicable question (N/A)

Yea B18's are good. I'd probably get a B18B non-VTEC if you're gonna be boosting it

one with low compression is ideal
B18B is supposed to be good for boost, but it lacks VTEC. Although it lacks VTEC, a B18B with boost will make around the same power as a B18C1 with the same amount of boost.
pretty much all the B-series respond well to boost though

ITR - Intergra Type R (B18C5)
GSR - USDM Integra GSR (B18C1)
