D16 vs b16

okay, so im building my engine first, and i plan to put it in a 92-95 civic either hatch or coupe, which ever is available to me at the time... but i was wondering if anyone has any advice or input on the engine selection... this is the way i look at it:

D16- its easy to find, cheaper, easy to deal with, SOHC, but less power
B16- DOHC, more money, harder to fix, more to worry bout, but more power

i would like to turbo the car... i beleive the compressions on the Bs are lower which would be better i suppose..but money is a big factor... any comments or thoughts towards the power outputs and gains, anything to really be concerned with when it comes down to the bottom line of it all?

forget the b16... to be completely honest, it's a really over-rated swap; $2250 for a swap package, and then you still need another $1000 to replace the high-wear components like the clutch, water pump, timing belt, ignition system, etc. Not worth a measly 160bhp IMO, not to mention they don't have much torque at all (a whopping what, 120ft*lbs?).

I say just build a d16z6 or a y8 for boost... you'll be happy with the results, trust me. Not to mention you can usually pick up a z6 for around $300-$500.

Welcome to the forums btw :D

Honestly IMO the best swap for the money is a B18B with a B16 transmission. You can have that for around $1300 or so complete. Slap a B16 intake manifold on it, a set of cams in the head, a decent clutch, and you will have a car faster than a B16 equiped car plus you would have the ability to boost because of the low compression, or do a vtec head swap o it later. In other words you would have a decently quick car for a low cost plus have plenty of room to grow in the future if you wanted to. The B16 is a higher compression engine and is on the verge of needing to be built or boosted to make any major leaps in performance plus like said above they really only have 5 more ft lbs of tq more than a Z6/Y8

how much hp are you looking to make after the boost? cause if you are only looking for about 200hp then the d series would b much more practical and cheaper to do!

you can also do a b20vtec w/b16 tranny as well a bit more torque and power because now you would be 2.0L as oppose to a 1.8L or 1.6L very nice jump.

thanks for the replies, haha everyone over on honda tech.com said go for the B, you guys said go for the D... im not looking for no super car here... id be please with a 200+ to a 300+ car, even the 300 is pushing it... we'll put it in the middle 255 lol... i dont plan for a 5 or 6 hundred horsepower civic, i dont have the time money or resources for that... im just lookin for a fun build that something fun to drive and quicker than the average car out there...and reliability is a big thing, i dont want to have to be fixing this thing every weekend...

I'm curious which B20 are you talking about?

You could even look into a JDM D15B they're pretty cheap and I think they create more power then the D16z6.

Btw, get a LSD tranny, it's worth it.
