1995 Civic CX. Where to start?

1995 Civic CX. Where to start?
Sitting with a stock '95 cx hatchback with a D15B8.
Not sure of how far I can get with this setup performance-wise so I have been reading around a bit and from what I read my best bet is to swap out for a B18C1. Is this my best alternative? I want to use the car as a daily driver, but something with power so that if I feel the need I can open it up or take it to a track for some fun. I'm not particularly concerned in aesthetics as much as I am performance. Looks can come after she deserves to have them by running right.
Any suggestions to get me goin would be appreciated
