93 civic with chocolate surprise oil
 

my head gasket blew on my 93 civic and there's coolant in my oil giving it a milk chocolate look. i have the 1.5l engine with about 183k. very well maintained, just replaced timing belt.

my mechanic told me that coolant will eat away at the brass coating on the bearings att'd to the driveshaft.

he said that i could put a new head gasket on and it could start knocking after 1 week, 3 months, 3 years...it is a gamble with no way of knowing what damage has been done without putting on a new gasket and X'ing my fingers.

could anyone verify this?

also, how difficult is it to put on a new gasket set? i know the kit itself is $197. i have the honda service manual but i heard that the bolt tightening sequence is pretty tricky.

any words of wisdom are appreciated. kinda green here

I have the d15b7 in a 92 civic dx and i just pulled my head 2 days ago?it took like 2 hrs but i have been doing this since i was young.Your manual on your car will take you step buy step you can buy it for like 10 bucks at the parts store.I would let him do it.

how long before you found out about the h2o in your oil, was your last oil change? if it was 3000 mile then your chances are not so good. $197.00 seems knda steep, what parts are they including in this head gasket set?

cracking open a motor with 183k on it ---i would think twice ---there might a crack in the head but you dont know that till you take it off---& the oil mixing with coolant isnt too good for your bearings either

even if its only a head gasket you'll still have to change the oil a few times to get all the coolant out of the oil

i blew my head gaskit in my old car, when it blew i was told that once the coolent gets to the oil then its useless to fix the car, your better of to swap the motor out (this is what i was told by a couple mechanics)..and then with that amount of km there like a 50% or more change that the head is worpped because of the heat, your going to have to get it machined
...its your choice but i think it would be your best bet to get a swap instead of spending the money to get this fixed then not knowing in a week/month/year when your cars gunna break down
