97 ex tranny

Im having some problems with my transmission. Its a 97 civic ex 5spd. It started out making a grinding noise in neutral only when i release the cluch. I took it in to local shop where he said id need a new tranny and clutch kit. i went with it and all i got was the same noise but now my 1st gear is where 3rd is, 3rd is where 5th used to be, and 5th is way off to the right. i asked the guy about it and he said thats how all civics shifters are and its because of my short shifter. does anyone know what could cause this......

This should be in Transmission & Differential forum. 5th gear is sopost to be all the way to the right and I don't see how your shortshifter would be causing a problem, is it a cheap ebay one?

Just to be clear, your saying that your gears ARE NOT like this?:
1 3 5

2 4 R

ummm....I don't see a short shifter doing that unless it did that right after installation. This could happen because of a bent linkage...grinding could be a throwout bearing...

its the right pattern, its just twisted to the right. in neutral instead of a straight 90 degree angle the shifter leans to the right at a 45 degree angle. my old tranny never did that.

look under your car and make sure the linkage is not bent.
