if the sound goes away when pedal is pressed then sounds like the main bearing. my old civic did that but i never messed with it. wasnt a problem just slightly anoying.

It can be the main bearing but it is usually the ISB. The ISB is a notorious problem with our transmissions.

Is there anything that could go wrong if I kept driving my car with the bad input shaft bearing. Is it vital that I change it?

I had my 4-door make that noise. Input shaft bearing. It isn't hard to replace once you crack the transmission open and only like $60 in parts if I recall correctly. A bad ISB is actually wearing your entire gearset down as it starts to get loose.

Do you know of any good DIY write up for this job?

No. I was following AllData when I was doing it.

Nothing a quick google search won't turn up

That's an outstanding DIY thread. I would definitely attempt the job, but it would rank in the high difficulty range for the average garage mechanic.

I wouldn't. It's a piece of cake compared to some of the other jobs out there. Like replacing synchros in a Saab.

P.S. this thread belongs in the transmission section.
