Build the D16Y8 or Swap???

I just inherited a super clean 00 Civic Ex Coupe. I like everything about this stock vehicle except for the lack of performance. I dont know much about the Honda scene as i am a previous DSM owner and enthusiast but i am willing to change sides and want to know how to get the most out of this vehicle without "sacrificing reliability", something that is impossible with my Eagle Talon. I dont know anything about this motor in the vehicle besides that it is a SOHC Vtec 1.6L with approx 93 HP at the wheels. I cant live with that and i want to know what engine mods would work with the D16Y8 in it, or what better motors would most easily swap into this chasis. The vehicle i have has an automatic tranny:( so if I did swap would a manual fit right up without modifications? Thanks Everyone

Swapping, sigh. Countless threads on what to swap. You gotta know your goals. Seriously, in my opinion, the d series (d16y8 in your case) is a terribly underestimated engine. Jeff Evans of Evans tuning got a lil over 300 hp on a stock internal d series. It probably didnt last long, but you can build a fairly reliable d series for 4kish and make great power. Its all up to you and what you want to spend and your goals

Would my motor handle that Edelbrock Victor X turbo kit without a build. I believe it has a fairly low compression ratio compared to other naturally asperated motors. I think its around 9.5-1
Also, i hear alot of people recommending the Ground Control suspension setup with Koni's. I havent heard anything about Tokico, Eibach, or other nice suspension kits. Is there a reason the GC kits are preferred... Thanks for posting bro

The victor x turbo kit is for the b series motors. You want the 1500 Edelbrock turbo kit for the d series motor and yes you motor can handle it without a build.

ground control coilover spring setup uses eibach springs. i have also heard about using koni's with it, i am using the ground control setup with just stock struts and its alot of fun. i found it at a junk yard and got them really cheap and good condition, but i dont know how long the struts will last, i think they will blow being made for non performance suspension. but you can lower your car anywhere from .5' to 3.5' i like it.

oh and about the d16y8 engine, i would keep it, i like mine, and its just the right amount of power and fuel economy. with my y8 i can get 36+mpg depending how i run it. with a dohc you may get 24+ idk havent had experience with em just know they are about 10 or so lower. manual swaps require a lot of work and modifications thru the firewall. one of my friends did one in his 98 civic ex and sold it, the main reason he sold it was because ever since he did the manual swap he had problems with it. so if you dont want to sacrifice reliability i wouldnt do the swap. but its your choice, if you have the money and experience or know someone that has enough experience, go for it. my friend also ran the piss outta his civic, ran nitrous in it and everything, so it was ragged on, that may have made it worse for the swap. but have fun. enjoy your new (to you)civic!

After doing a little research i believe im going to keep the motor stock. Ill just add the common breathe better mods and enjoy one of the most reliable vehicles produced for what it is. but out of curiosity i wonder if the stock internales would handle a turbo...
