Coolant Lines

I'm not sure where this belongs, so mods if it belongs somewhere else feel free to move it.

Okay i installed a fancy Cold Air Intake today, and I have a question. I was supplied with a hose that I assume goes from the air intake tube to the breather port on the valve cover. Okay i said to myself that's easy enough until I noticed these extra lines running along with the original air tube to breather port assembly. From the looks of it they appear to be coolant lines (well I know they are because now one is leaking [&:] ) One goes on the top side of the intake and the other goes to the underside and they form a U shape with a metal line at the top. Can I just route a custom shortened hose from one location to the next (elimiating the metal line part and making the Cold air kit fit) or do they do something special by being connected to to the vc to Air Tube thingy?
