Default coolant problem, I think

took the car out today, everything was fine until it got up to temperature and came up to a red light and went to leave again. big continuous puff of white smoke. Worekd fine again after cool down, this only happens when i have to stop.
The temp gauge went into the red but went right back down right before i had a spot to pull over, she smoked when i pulled over.
I wouldnt mind so much if it wasent for traffic, stop signs, red lights, or left turns.
Im guessing a compression test?
