d16y7/y8 mini me surge

i have just completed my mini me swap in a 96 del sol. it has a 96 d16y7 block with a 97 y8 head and a 2000 y8 intake manifold...everything runs fine but the engine surges from 700 to 2500 rpm...can figure out y. pluged the air injection holes on the intake and all hoses r good...can anyone help me?

When does it surge? Just at idle? Zero throttle?

Have you checked your pcv valve? Pull it out and shake it. If you don't hear it rattle, get a new one. Also, you could simply pinch the pcv hose shut with your fingers while the engine is running and listen. If the pcv is good, the idle should drop enough that you can hear it.

Also, check your fast-idle valve. I'm not 100% sure if you have one, I just know that some Hondas do. My friend's ej2 was surging from about 500-2500rpm and his problem was the fast idle valve.

Is the CEL ON?

I don't think you have a FITV.

Also check for an intake air leak from the throttle body and IM gaskets. Did you remember to reconnect all of the vacuum hoses?

In addition, try bleeding the cooling system of trapped air.

Relevent thread is relevant.

And I stand corrected, the OBD0/I cars are the ones with the FITV... OBDII have normal IACVs I believe

OBD0/I have IACV too... well at least OBDI does. Not so sure about OBD0.

Pretty sure that the OBDII PCV valve does what the FITV in the OBD0/II cars do.

Trust, the breather/PCV system serves solely an emissions reduction purpose. It does not increase idle speed when the engine is cold, as does the FITV.

Yea lol, idfk.

But ron, a failed pcv valve can cause surging. We just covered this in class like two weeks ago ;)

And stu, all the pcv system does is get the blow-by gasses out of the crank-case.

Absolutely. You are correct. I hope you didn't think that I was disagreeing with your original advice to the OP. I just wanted to correct Stu's statement.

The PCV system uses vacuum from the IM to suck blow-by gas out of the crankcase. Just like any other vacuum line attached to the IM, a leak in the PCV system can cause a high or surging idle. By contrast, a clogged PCV valve or a clogged PCV or breather hose may cause a low idle because the air volume flowing from the PCV system into the IM factors into establishing the final engine idle speed.

Okay, sorry about that... you saying it didn't increase idle speed made it sound like you were disagreeing :D
