Is D16Y8 good engine to upgrade?

I have a 97 Honda Civic EX with a D16Y8 vtec engine. I want to know if it’s a good engine to upgrade? And I want to know what are some good thing to do to it first? It has air intake already and been adding new things here and there. It gets up and goes that’s for sure.

No, it's not really a good engine to upgrade. You're better off leaving it alone, or swapping to something else. There's not much really offered for it, as it's a fuel mileage engine, that'll run for 250K miles mostly trouble free (you have to check the oil once in a while).

This is too vague of a question. What are your power goes and how much do you want to spend?

I have no idea what the other person above me is trying to say. Sounds like he is talking out of his ass at this point. Throw a turbo on the D16 and you can make low to mid 200's. I had a D16y8 with a supercharger, cam, and meth injection. It made 165whp at 2500rpms and it was a friggin go cart that put smiles on everyone's faces. My biggest mistake was pulling that motor/supercharger for a H22 (Prelude) motor. Your goals will determine whether or not the D16 motor is best for you.

If you're talking about what I said, about the D16Y8 being a mileage motor, that's what it is. If I'm wrong, then why does everyone want to run a "B" series engine, or do a "K" swap? I mean you even went to an H22 swap. Point I was making, is there's not much you can do to a D16Y motor. Turbo or supercharge is about it. Unfortunately is has a very restrictive bottom end oiling system, so it likes to eat #4 rod bearings (BTDT, rebuilt it). You'll never make any real power with the single overhead cam. Of course money always factors into it as well. But a good turbo (not e-bay) with all of it's bits and pieces will run 4 to 6K if you want it to live. For that kind of money, you can do a "K" swap and still have more reliable power, or the option to add a turbo or supercharger.

But still, it would be nice to know what his power goal is, and how much money he wants or has to spend (budget?).
