the least you could do would be to go catback and new header, the next thing would be to swap to a d17a2, theres like 25 more horsies there, or small turbo, or swap to a k series, period, thats it

A head swap for the VTEC head (like in the D17a2) would only yeild 12 more hp:

D17A2 1.7L SOHC VTEC-E 01 Civic EX 127hp
D17A1 1.7L SOHC non-VTEC '01+ Civic DX/LX 115hp

Doing a full swap just for that would a total waste of money, when you can stick muuuch better engines in there.

I'm guessing that you're not really looking for a swap, so Intake, Header, and Exhaust are all good mods. Short shifters are also a nice easy, inexpensive install that will really affect your day to day driving.

correct me if im wrong, but you can only cleanly swap a k series in there though

short shifter wont add any hp

i cant find any header for the d17a1, but im pretty sure the d17a2 header will fit, 99.9999% sure

Hah, yeah didn't know it was an auto... Even though it doesn't increase hp, it definitely speeds up your car with quicker shifts.

Im' not sure on the swap, way to far out of my price range to even consider. I've got the a2 in mine, and the VTEC is there, but it's nothing like a built DOHC when it kicks in, thats for sure . I don't know how much a new head would cost, but it doesnt seem like it would be worth it unless you like to spend a lot of time in the 4500+ RPM range (which doesn't seem as likely in an auto). Theres no doubt it WOULD help, but it just comes down to cost effectiveness. (Do a m/t swap first!! heh...). Header and Exhuast are definetly going to give you more bang for your buck for an auto especially.
