Differences in B series

Besides compression, VTEC, and probably cams, what is the difference between the B18B and the B18C?

I did some searching and someone stated that the B18B has a tougher block? But I wouldn't see how to B series engines would have different blocks unless that's just how Honda works...

Everything is different. The block is no stronger in the B18B though.

The crank has a longer stroke. The rod bolts are not as strong in the B18B, the block is not plumbed for vtec on the B18B's. But the blocks are different. The B18B and B20's use the same block while the B16, B18C1, B18C5, and B18C's use the same block.

Are you aware of any design flaws with the B18B?

And how is the head design?

not a flaw but what alot of people dont take into account is that in stock form the B18B bottom end and the B18B head is not made to go much beyond 7000rpm. Other than that which IMO is not a flaw the B18B is no different than other B's. The B18B will make more tq in every part of the rev range than other b18's though.

Excellent... the more I look into this B18B the more I think it may be the engine I'm looking for.

I want a lot of torque, and I'm going turbo. I don't want a peaky engine, I want something with as broad a torque band as Honda will allow (lol) I like how the B18B is cheap and non-vtec, also in stock trim it has good compression for f/i.

I've read that the head on the B18B may not flow well compared to other heads that can be swapped onto it? I couldn't find any specific info on this subject. I don't want to convert to vtec if that's what was implied.

Also, I have read bits and pieces that the B18B can be fitted with either of two tranmissions, the GSR or the LS, and I read that the GSR is the preferred transmisson... is that because it is geared lower? Is it available with oem LSD?

use an SiR head and dont wire up the vtec.

RE: Differences in B series

Are there any flow differences between the two heads if the head were to be ported anyways? I have a feeling the stock LS head has enough potential when ported that it would negate the need for the SiR head.

you are correct^^^

Here's then differences in the transmissions. I think they're all about the same strength wise.

That chart was kinda confusing, so I'm looking at either a Y80 or an S80, right?

It appears that they both have the same final drive raito, but the S80's individual gears are numerically higher (geared lower). And both can be found with OEM LSD.
