run a compreesion test and see how the cylinders are doing.

RE: do i need new engine
or do a leakdown test or also try a wet compression test

RE: do i need new engine
Yea, you need rebuild. A new engine will cost much less.

RE: do i need new engine
hiya its got 74000 miles on clock and 1998 is the year'
i would nt know how to do a compression test unfortunally i would have to put it into a garage then were talking big bucks so a new engine would prob be the answer for me ? angie. |
RE: do i need new engine
More than likely your piston rings are worn. You'll need either a rebuild or a new engine. If you can track down a cheap enough engine, that may come out cheaper. Get quotes on a rebuild to be sure though.

Compression test blows head gasket??!
"If he did a compression test at that amount of milage he would more then likely blow the head gasket"
How would running a compression test blow the head gasket? When a cylinder compresses there is X pressure. When a cylinder compresses and there is combustion, there is a lot more than just X pressure, right? I am asking because I am trying to figure out how to do a compression test on my 91 hatchback. The channels to the spark plugs are so long, are there compression gages which are made to accomodate this? |
