Can anyone tell me how long a 1999 1.6 vtec engine can take being in the red on the heat gauge without causing any engine damage? My civic got a hole in radiator and temp went into the red before i realised, only for a couple of min then i stopped. engine sounds fine now thou??? any help would be great

RE: engine burn out

keep coolant in it. if it has a problem, it will show itself soon in burning coolant or rough idle.

I don't think a few minutes would hurt it too bad......you might get lucky.

if you let it run once, the new radiator is fitted, you shall see if the engine has been damaged, as you will get steam out your exhaust if the cyclinder head gasket went.
