Default engine problem with my civic

i got a 1997 automatic 4 door and yesterday morning while drivivng it to school it shakes when i step on the brake and the check engine light turns on.while going uphill in D4 it is sluggishly slow and tried shifting to 2 and i didnt feel that gear change to the lower gear.anywayz after i got back home i changed the spark plugs and notice it stopped shaking during braking.still though i dont feel that power in 2nd and i regained a little bit power when on D4 going uphill.and the check engine light hasnt gone off.

im new to this site and if anyone had this problem before i was wondering if you can help a fellow civic rida out!thanks.

The code he's talking about is a computer (ECU) that runs and monitors the engines many differant functions think of it as your cars manager. . . no then the no power deal you may have a vacuum leak in your kick down line between your transmission and your intake
cheap fix (less than $5.00 more than likely) it may also be your vaccum solinoid that the line is going to i believe there diaphraigm that can split in there that can cuase it to do that, beyond that try manually shifting it at the base of the hill and climbing it if that dont work it's time to swap in a 5-speed and enjoy a more pure drive from now on!

I had something similar to this where my engine kinda huff and puff and idling wasnt normal. I don't remember which one it was or if both cause the problem but i replace the oil ring, cylinder head gasket, and crank seal
YOu said that their was oil under the distributor. THe problem could be the o ring and that is cheap to replace but if it is the distributor itself it could be a little expensive.

Also check cat converter . sometimes with a lot of miles
these things collapse and plug the exhaust
