engine rpm vs. speed
 

i drive a civic esi with a stock d16z6 engine. i was wondering if should there be something like a correct engine rpm for a corresponding speed? a ratio of some sort, perhaps?

for example, when i am in 4th gear, at 2000 rpm, the speedo reads 60kph. when i am at 90 kph, in 5th gear, my rpm reads 2400rpm.

is this normal for this kind of engine or is my impression that it is too much rpm for a rather "slow" speed?

Thanks for the reply, I was wondering where you are located and how much you are asking for it? Is the engine running? What Horsepower?

Dam we have weird spammers lately..... but can you maybe most in mph? im much to lazy to convert it :(

the rpms and actually speed are due to the transmission
the d16z6 comes with a transmission with shorter gearing to give u quicker acceleration
if you got the transmission from the D15b8 or z1 you would have longer gearing for mpg but slower acceleration and you would also have lower cruising rpms at any given speed

Get a jdm Si-R cluster and you'll get real good at converting kph to mph real fast :D

It's ~40mph and ~55mph, respectively.


OP, that actually sounds perfectly normal for a civic. I remember I used to sit at around 3000rpm at highway speeds in my old '94 civic. Unfortunately, calculating vehicle speed based on engine speed would require a lot of other information (given gear ratio, final drive ratio, wheel size, tire size, and even that be assuming a perfectly flat road negating weight, torque, and Cd), so the easy answer is your car is perfectly fine.
