fuel increase during break-in period?

I just bought a brand new 2006 Honda Civic Sedan LX. The fuel consumption shown on the manual is city: 30 MPG. However, I figured out that the real consumption before 300 KM is 21.5 MPG. Is it normal? Thanks for your advice.

is this your first stick?

I got my civic this summer and it was my first stick shift car. I noticed that at the beginning my mileage wasn't all that great. But as I kept driving it, and got better at driving a stick like knowing when to shift and getting better with the clutch my gas mileage as climbed.

Sorry that I forgot to say that my car is automatic transimission. It is my second car. Do you think the fuel consumption will be increased much during break-in period? Thanks.

Yeah, seems backwards to me. Mileage on a Civic shouldnt be that low period, especially with I-VTEC which is supposed to conserve fuel. Hopefully all the parts will work themselves together, and it will all sort itself out.

Also, companies overrate MPG a little, actual mileage will be less. But from 30 to 21 is too big of a difference.
