Default head ?

hey is there anyway to tell if you have bent valves without taking off the head?because the guy i got the car off the guy he said the timing belt broke does that automatilly mean that the valves are bent?and i got the car for 120 i'll post pics later today

there is no sure fire way to check without removing the heads, but if the engine isnt an interference motor, you might be ok.

one way you can get an idea...you could do a compression check...but if the motor is damaged, it will only tell you that you dont have compression/the proper compression, not if it a bent valve, or possibly cylinder damage

Ideal as far as what, the stock compression ratio is 9.2 to 1 but if your doing a compression test it should be 175psi or more

A good rule of thumb is that the compression in all the cylinders should be about the same. I don't think that all the valves will bend if the belt snaps. And the compressions should be around 175 as MD said.

Yeah, like Agent said, a broken timing belt will never bend valves on all cylinders (unless you turn the cam and keep cranking it). So you should be looking for similar compression numbers on all four.
