How do you install a tachometer anyways?

I was just toying around the idea of installing a tachometer. It would be external (outside the dash). Any recommendations on brands ?
Would the install be easy ?

One of my freinds just got one of those and its lit up pretty bright and works real well, it does it's job just fine. Of course you can get somethin big with nice shift light like mill$civic. Look at his photo gallery for pictures of his. Heres on of the large ones like Mill$.

As far as installing them, i know in the EK's (96-00), in your engine bay right by the driver side fender, there is a blue wire with a little cap on it. That is your tach wire. Just splice into that, extend it to where the tach is to be installed and you'll be all set. Then just wire the tach to a power/ground so that it comes on when your car comes on. This would be most easily accomplished by checking your fuse box inside your car and wiring teh power into one of them that comes on with the igntion. Then just wire the ground to a metal screw somewhere on your car, anywhere with bare steel will do.

But if you have a tach already (which i dont think you do, but just in case), i thikn right on the back of the cluster behind the tach there is the signal wire right there (use that wire instead of the blue wire in the engine bay).

flip, can you send me a pic of where this wire is located? i have never noticed it before...but then agian, i never have really looked. i will be installing one here someday, but also, i think that all clusters have the signal wire already there, because when my friend swaped to an si cluster from a dx (no tach) it worked plug and play. but im not 100% sure

im pretty sure you dont need to fine the wire.... my buddy has a 93 or 94 dx hatch back, and he just plugged it in, and it all worked fine. just plug it in and try it... if it doesnt work, its not too hard to run 2 wires.

So I finally got one. It comes with 5 wires in 5 different colors. Any help on how to properly splice the wires? Tips for installing a tach on an EK civic ?

aftermarket tachs should have directions telling u how to hook up, should tell u what wires go to what
