How to tell?

How to tell?
This may be a silly thing to ask, but how do you know what kind of an engine you have? Like a d17,d16,h22..ect. And what exactly do they mean, thanks! (Btw, I'm retarded when it comes to cars, for the most part, but I'm willing to learn.)

RE: How to tell?
Your engine code's stamped on the block. You should be able to see it if you're looking at your engine from the front of the car. Take a peek down and to your left, and you should be able to see it. The first two numbers in your code denote the engine's displacement, while the third one denotes a revision or upgraded version, I believe. I'll use my car as an example. A D16Y8 = 1.6 liters. Now the "8" is the revision #, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's the 8th revision in that series....like, I've seen a D16Y5, and a Y7, but no D16Y2 or anything. I think the Y is also part of the revision, because there's also the D16Z6...I hope this helps
