How a turbo works?

I always hear people talking about stage 2's, different psi's, etc. and to be honest i dont know what theyre talking about. I know a lot about engines and how they work but turbos have always stumped me. So could someone please explain to me how they work and how they make your car go so much faster in easy to understand terms. Also explain the diff. components. Thanks alot

the bees and goats guide that tony posted is the best one ive ever seen. read that and...well at first you will be like 'what?' but after the second or third time through you will know everything you need to know as a beginner.

Turbos are very simple machines with some very complicated physics... I love 'em. I've spent hours and hours and hours researching them and using different turbos on my diesel I used to have.

I disigned, fabricated, and installed my own set of sequential compounds on my truck... they ran slick as hell.

How Stuff Works is great but if you want more info you can go to the library and check out Fundamentals of the IC Engine by Willard Pulkrabek. I help teach an engines lab with it and its a great starting point.

RE: How a turbo works?

here I can give you a simple way to think about it

Exhaust comes out
Exhaust pushes a wheel
The wheel pushes a shaft
The shaft spins a fan like thing
The fan like thing blow alot of air out
The air goes through piping
The air enters you intake manifold
Being it is being constantly pushed it compresses air into the engine that the engine could never pull in on it's own
Add the correct amount of fuel, you got a mass quntity of 2 out of the 3 things to run a engine. 1 being air and 1 being fuel, add spark and your good to go
