i think im idleing too high...?

i have a b16a and i just finished changing the gasket for the exhaust manifold, i have a header, but it is like 4-5*c outside but i started it after not being started and it idled at like 1600 then after a rev it dropped to 1500, then dropped to 1250-1000 after it warmed up, is that normal for a vtec motor when its cold?

civicexracer 12-01-2011 05:02 PM

It's normal. My '95 EX, '99 EX and friends '91 Si all initially idle around 15-1600rpm at start but then drop slowly as the car warms up. Normal operating temp idle is anywhere from 500-900rpm for them and as it should be for these cars.

If you car continues to idle 1000rpm or above while at operating temp you may either need a mild tune up or simply need to adjust your idle screw.

Also make sure there are no loads on the motor such as A/C, headlights, etc..

ok thanks man, appreciate it, how long do you let your car warm up for? with a vtec

civicexracer 12-01-2011 08:23 PM

It doesn't matter that they have v-tec. If it's freezing or below, I usually wait at least a couple of minutes before going anywhere. If it's reeeally cold I'll take my time and let it warm up for a few minutes. If I'm in a hurry, I'll get going but I'll coast in neutral as much as possible and wont rev up too high until it starts warming up.

theRDRman 12-01-2011 09:23 PM

oh ok thanks for clearin it up, so like a good 5 min i take it?

DaOne 12-01-2011 10:23 PM

Yeah.. 5 Min should be good..
Just look at your temp gage lmao. You'll see it start to move up

theRDRman 12-02-2011 10:16 AM

mine wont move till i move haha

emridge 12-11-2011 09:30 PM

Should be at 650 rpms when warm and anywhere from 1600 and down as it goes through its warm up

theRDRman 12-11-2011 10:08 PM

yeah im usually at 800-900 but my tach is off cus i have a b16a swap , but it sounds fine when it idles now

Why would your tach be off due to a swap? lol.
