long block v.s short block

I was wondering what the differences in the long and short block engines were and what the power differences are. Is it that big of a deal or no? Im doing a mini me swap on my 98 DX and was wondering which one i need or if it even matters cuz i found an entire short block y8 for $500.

long block means the block and the head. short block means just the block.
