I was looking around on some part sites and stumbled upon these oil and tranny plugs that have a magnet on the tips of them. apparently they are to collect small, loose metalic particles that flow thru the engines fluids. they claim to extend the life of the engine and tranny. ur supposed to put them in with the next oil change/tranny fluid change and im gena be changing my oil soon and might have to change the tranny fluid as well(need to check that) Has anyone heard of these or have them? do u think it actully works? i know they arnt gena make a dramatic difference but anything can help...esp. on an old engine. any feedback on this is greatly appreciated.

I've heard of them, but i've never used one before. It sounds like a pretty good idea, especially for your engine. You don't want metal shavings to be traveling through the engine with the oil. You will also be able to tell if you have major problems if you find lots of metal on the plugs as well. They run like $20.00 so i dunno if i would get one.

Yes I heard of them and seen them before. Small metal shaving do actually stick to the magnet.

 

I think that some transmissions already have them. I remember that i was changing a trans filter one time and when i took out the drain plug for the trans, there was all these grey metal shavings stuck to the drain plug. That drain plug was magentic from the factory, but it didn't have that thing sticking out.

 

i heard that the transmission plug comes with a magnet stock so dont have to worry about that. im still considering this cuz i wana try to keep my engine in tip-top shape and running well. figure this might help atleast a little bit...i found some on ebay for about $15 shipped, expensive for a little bolt but prolly still the cheapest...

 

they sound like a good idea but id imagine youd have to pull them and take the metal off of them a lot.

 

i ust to run them on my mx race bikes and they work well for collecting metal shavings but take my word on these " DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THEM " since they are two peices they are extremely brittle and brake off really easy, we snapped one off in the bottom of my cases and had to use a backout tool and it barely came out...

 

spoon makes them, and all aircraft use them. so they have to be good

 

i read that every oil change u just clean the metal shavings off and place it back in there.
