N22A1

Anyone know anything about the N22A1? All I know is that it's a 2.2l turbo diesel pushing 140hp and 250lb-ft of torque, and you can't get it in the states. Honda puts it in the Accord in the UK and is going to put it in the '07 civic type-s. I'd be interested to hear some things about it, perhaps someone knows someone that has imported one?

Wow, that would be really cool to have a diesel in a civic. Crazy good gas mileage and you could totally bio diesel it! In Japan I used to have a 00 TDI Jetta with western configuration (left side wheel) and I really liked it and it was pretty quick for under 100hp. I am pro bio diesel too, so I'd like to know more about that engine.... do you happen to know anything about MPG?

RE: N22A1

It's supposed to get in the range of 55MPG stock in the Accord, so putting it in the lighter Civic Type-S Hatch and adding a few mods should boost that to something like 65MPG. Wow, so I come here asking questions about it and already I know more about it than most people.

But anyway, 250lb-ft of torque puts it on the higher end of the scale for Honda, with only a few of the V6 J-Series having more torque (J32 at 255lb-ft and J35 at 264lb-ft).

You probably know more about it than any of us US guys...tell us about it, any links?

Well, I was reading the October '06 issue of Sport Compact Car when I saw a short blurb mentioning the '07 Type-S (it's on page 44). The blurb mentioned a 2.2L TDi engine and having never heard of such a thing from Honda before, I went looking for more info. I found only articles for car reviewers in the UK, talking about the Accord as well as the type S. I hit up Wikipedia to see what info they could provide, but unfortunately there was no page for the N22A1, just a model of 5-door civic that runs it and mentions the engine code in passing. I got the power rating from the original article and the torque rating from the UK websites, which also confirmed the power rating. But that's IT.

But damn, the S in Type-S must be for "Sexy"

Honda has been making disels for a good while but only offer them in Japan, they have had Honda Life's for a while with a I-DSI turbo engine in it for a while now.

HONDA i-DSI

Introducing, the 1.3-litre, 4- cylinder i-DSI engine- the latest in Honda's new generation of i-series engines. It is a lightweight, compact, high-performance engine with plenty of horsepower and ample torque at any rpm that uses intensive combustion to achieve a combination of ultra-high fuel efficiency and clean emissions.

The engine is equipped with two spark plugs in each of its newly designed, compact combustion chambers. These sparks are activated in a different order depending upon engine rpm and load, resulting in intelligent, dual-point sequential ignition control to achieve intensive fuel combustion at any rpm.

Two spark plugs per cylinder are arranged diagonally to accelerate flame propagation in the combustion chamber, thus achieving rapid combustion of the air-fuel mixture and obtaining high output from a minimum amount of gasoline. This intensive combustion at any rpm not only controls knocking, but also permits a much higher compression ratio, achieving a maximum output of 63kW (86PS) at 5700 rpm, and maximum torque of 119Nm (12.1kg-m) at 2800 rpm. The engine is paired with Honda's newly-developed, lightweight, compact Multimatic S continuously-variable-speed transmission, which minimizes engine power loss to achieve ultra-high fuel efficiency. Furthermore, harmful exhaust emissions have also been greatly reduced: the i- DSI engine's clean performance is recognized by the National Ministry of Transportation's "Low Emissions Excellence" certification.
