Hi guys, I have a question here,. I just got back from a 8 hour drive and theres a strange sound coming from the engine. It sounds like a fast poping sound as if the header is open? But it only happens at high rpm and only when im in gear. I can rev it like mad when its out of gear and I dont hear it...and thoughts.

 

Have you made any significant changes recently? Judging by your screen name I'm assuming that you have a boosted d series? Do you have any sort of knock detection? What engine management are you running and when was the last time you had your maps checked out?

I had "popping" on my boosted D too. I did nothing about it, and end up blowing the motor. Get yours checked, ASAP

 

No its a stock (sept for I/H/E) d15b7. I have no idea what this could be....it only make the sound under load at high rpm. Im going out to run a compression test right now.....

 

ran the comp test and the old girl is pumping out 175 psi +/- 3 psi. so thats fine...anyone have thoughts on this????

 

Look around man. Search for holes in the exhaust, or anything out of the ordinary for that matter.

 

Well I think/hope I've found the problem...I can see a carbon trail leading out of where the header bolts to the DP. Here are some pics. I guess I just need a new gasket and to bolt it in there tighter this time. Strange that it only make the sound under load though.
