Opinions on a Jasper reman
 

I have a 99 Civic EX 115k, not sure which b engine, that somehow lost 2.5 quarts of oil and now has bottom engine issues. My mechanic, which I believe is very good, said either a used or reman is in order. He suggests a reman from Jasper installed for around $4500 and comes with a 3yr/100k warranty.

2 questions - Is Jasper the reman company to go with? Is $4500 resonable for a vtec + labor in NJ?

Wikipedia your car, you will find out that you should have a D16y8 motor. Replacements can be found locally for $500 or less. You would paying for that warranty pretty much. Labor on a stock motor swap would probably be about $1k at most.

Thanks for the input. It is a remanufactured rather than a used motor with over 100k. Still sounds way to high? There is no way to check to cost of the motor through Jasper, prices are only given by their network of installers. Guess I'll call a few of them for prices.

$4,500 would be high for a fully built d16y8 with aftermarket pistons, rods, new rings, new gaskets, new valves and a transmission in good shape

so yes, even for a remanufactured engine, $4.5k is high. Convenient? yes. Cheap? no.

I say look through craigslist and find a low mileage donor, buy it and pay someone to drop it in for you. Shouldn't cost you more than $1500-2000 total, depending on prices in your area and how good of a deal you get on labor from your mechanic.
