Yeah, it's a little confusing.

When you're up shifting it makes sense that the computer can stop it, but in a situation like that, because the gears are connected, it seems that the only way to stop it totally would be to have the clutch disengage.

Cars rev-limiters only work on the upshift and not the downshift. The downshift rpm is the driver's responsibility. Here is a nice quote I found about that although 9000 and 8300 rpm aren't that far apart to really offer significant wear on an infrequent basis.

"Sometimes you might wish to downshift at a higher RPM because you want to aggressively pass other vehicles, but make sure that you know what you're doing---such downshifting can DESTROY YOUR ENGINE by taking it above the "red line." Even if your car has a governor, it will be unable to stop downshift-induced overreving, and the resulting destruction of your valves."

rev limiter ftw, you need to eitehr convert to OBD1 or get a piggyback to get it though. Revving high for a second or two as long as your engine has been warmed up REALLY well isnt that bad, but you should still try to avoid it.

So did you win the race or what? haha

Just to let you know its really not alright to be high revving your engine all the time. I laugh everytime I hear some guy at a stop light bounging his rpms off the rev limmitter because he likes the sound of his CAI. That is the best way in the world to snap a timing belt. Expecially in a higher mileage Honda....say 60,000 +. As most of you know we have interferance negines in Hondas. Soooo if your timing belt snaps so do your valves, springs, retainers, and alot else. Just thought I'd throw that in.

this thread makes no sense. were your downshifting into 2nd from a higher gear and went over 9k? if thats what you did do not do it again, you can seriously destroy your engine in seconds. now 9k isn't really that much for a b16 since stock fuel cut is like 8300, but it does take a toll.

now hitting the limiter all the time is not realy good either, but its not the worst thing in the world, so just drive like a normal human.

How long have you had that car, or been driving for that matter. When I downshift to do a pull I can tell what gear to drop it into depending on what gear I'm in and what rpm it is before I downshift. If you would learn this then you wouldn't have went to 9k rpm in the first place, and when you did it shouldn't have taken you "1-2 seconds" to figure out that you need to push the clutch in again because thats not good, I'm guessing you should have dropped it into 3rd instead.

I might sound like an *** but I don't mean it, I'm just curious.

well, ive been driven for 2 years now but im no idiot, but i don't think anyone in a race would mean to go to 3rd and hit 2nd.... but i had just got done doing two runs against this d15b7 who wanted to race me and then this teg and i beat him on the 40 roll but then on my 5th over all pull,we were at dead stop, i started, went to 2nd, to 3rd, and then down (oh and to clarify what i ment as down, i ment down to4th and when i did that i guess i was at about 80-83 rpms)as quick as possible and i guess i was just a lil nervous bout the teg and it went over into 2nd...but its my 4th overall week in this car and that was my first night of racing in it.....thanks for the insults, i really just started this to figure out if there is any internal damage that im not aware of, i don't drop from 3rd to 2nd at high speeds for fun, i realized it was not a good thing.....

oh and im 18 by the way to clarify driving experience

Ok I understand what happened now. Yea, as long as you don't do that often then it shouldn't be a problem.
